Genocide
Tutsi-led Genocide-
On April 6, 1994, a plane carrying President Habyarimana was shot down killing him. This act of violence instantly began a war between the Tutsi and Hutu which resulted in more than three quarters of all the Tutsi in the area being killed. Hutu extremist set up road blocks around the country of Rwanda killing all Tutsi that tried to flee the country. Along with the Tutsi, thousands of Hutu who opposed the violence were brutally murdered as well. Women and children were raped and murdered, and it is estimated that nearly 800,000 were killed in the genocide. Throughout all this international powers failed to do anything to stop the violence and for the most part would not even acknowledge the crime. When international powers finally voiced disapproval the Hutu changed their tactics, but not their final goal.
