Joseph Kasavubu
Joseph Kasavubu was born on 1910 in Tshela, Belgian Congo. He died on March 24, 1969 at his farm in Boma, Congo. In 1942, Kasavubu entered the civil
service and later received the rank of chief clerk, which was the highest
position open to Congolese in the Belgian colonial administration. During the
late 1940’s, Kasavubu held important offices that were political organizations
operating in defiance of Belgian authorities. Kasavubu sought an independent
Congowith a feudal structure that would ensure a certain measure of Bakongo autonomy. In 1955 Kasavubu became president of the powerful association of Bakongo. He was then elected mayor of the Dendale district. Kasavubu dismissed Lumumba and appointed a new government, along with supporting Mobutu’s first coup in 1960.
