Laurent-Désiré Kabila was born on November 27, 1939 in the Belgian Congo, Katangaprovince. He was assassinated on January 18, 2001. Kabila was a youth leader and was allied to Patrice Lumumba. After Mobutu overthrew Lumumba in 1960, Kabila helped organize a revolt in the Ruzizi region. In 1967 Kabila founded the People’s Revolutionary Party, however it came to an end 1988 and Kabila was thought to be dead. Kabila returned in 1996 leading his forces into a full scale rebellion against Mobutu. Mobutu fled and Kabila named himself head of state, created the Public Salvation Government and renamed the Congoto the Democratic Republic of Congo.
