Laurent Nkunda
General Laurent Nkunda was born on February 2, 1967 in
Nord-Kivu, Congo-Kinshasa. He started his military career on 1993 when he joined the Front National Patriotique Rwandais, which stopped the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 perpetrated by the Hutu government in
Kigali. After this victory Nkunda returned to
Congo-Kinshasa where he joined the rebellion of Alliances
des Forces démocratiques
pour la libération du Congo, which was led by
Laurent-Désiré Kabila. This organization
was responsible for dismissing Mobutu in 1997. In 1998 Nkunda became an officer of the Ressemblement Congolais pour la Démocratie-Goma during the Second Congo War. After the war Nkunda joined the new Congolese army with the rank of General. However he rejected the government and withdrew with soldiers, starting the Kivu War until his arrest in 2009.
